So what is gluten? 

It is a protein that is found in wheat and in a variety of other flours, such as rye and barley, to a lesser degree.  The word "gluten" literally means glue.  Both people and dogs can develop a sensitivity to it, (allergy), so that they must maintain strict dietary regulations or suffer uncomfortable side effects.

Frequently,  it is NOT listed as an ingredient on a dog food label. This

may hide a potential health hazard for dogs that have allergies or

gluten sensitivities.

 
How do I know if my dog is intolerant of gluten?

Gluten intolerance is extremely common in both canines and humans!  The allergy is called "celiac disease".  In this condition, glutens will cause inflammation and gradual destruction of the lining of the small intestine. As a result, food becomes poorly absorbed and in the dog, will continue to aggravate the large bowel, causing COLITIS. This causes intermittent slimy and/or bloody diarrhoea, with straining and discomfort.

Does gluten allergy cause any other symptoms?

Yes. It can also cause skin and ear infections, idiopathic seizures, chronic stomach problems such as flatulence, diarrhea, burping, and it may also cause inexplicable behavior changes. It is essential that you have your dog examined promptly by a vet, should you suspect a gluten allergy.

And, what if my dog is gluten -sensitive?

SIMPLE: AVOID ALL DIETARY GLUTEN !!!! 

The pet food industry uses wheat widely, mostly as a direct carbohydrate addition to both wet and dry dog foods. Furthermore, wheat is an ingredient in a wide range of doggy treats.

ALWAYS READ THE LABEL - IF YOUR DOG IS ALLERGIC TO GLUTEN, AVOID ALL DOG FOOD/ TREATS THAT LIST "WHEAT", "CEREALS", "PRODUCTS OF ANIMAL OR VEGETABLE ORIGIN" or simply "WHEAT GLUTEN".

 Better still, ONLY purchase dog food products that specify "GLUTEN FREE" on the label.
